Carved and gilt pine, mitred and keyed. 5 inches wide.
An example of the hand-carved Maratta frames Lawrence was using in the 1790s. The frame bears two labels, the one fixed to it when the portrait was sent to the Royal Academy exhibition in 1792, giving details of the picture, the other a damaged and largely illegible framemaker's label of the period. The portrait came to the Gallery with that of Sir Graham's brother, General Sir John Moore, likewise painted by Lawrence, but in the early 1800s and framed in the heavy style of the period exemplified by the artist's portrait of Lord Castlereagh (NPG 891).
