The Swiss medallist came to London in 1740 to strike a series of medals of famous men. Among the first to be produced were the medals of Pope and Folkes which the engraver George Vertue noted as 'done from the life and ... free and boldly cut'.

Composer Johann Sebastian Bach publishes his set of Goldberg Variations, supposedly written for performance by the young harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg.
