His self-portrait shows him in the uniform of the recently founded Royal York Marylebone Volunteers. Although a private, Harding has depicted the cut of his uniform with the kind of fashionable features reserved for an officer's dress. This is seen in the deep 'V' of the collar to reveal the stock and frilled shirt.
