The ancient ruins found throughout the Italian peninsular offered visitors both a ghostly reminder of a bygone age and proof of the creative output of a heroic past. Ruins also fuelled the contemporary craze for collecting, archaeology and antiquarianism. Attributed to John Partridge, this drawing is inscribed 'Selimonte' which suggests that it was made during a visit to this ancient Greco-Roman site in Sicily, called Selinunte in Italian. The jumbled heap of broken columns and plinths, having so artfully toppled on to a stone platform, creates a composition that is both architectonic and almost resembles a still-life.
