The sitter is Samuel Edwards (died 1815) of Cotham Lodge, near Bristol, High Sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1795. He was a partner in Bristol Old Bank.

The handwritten note identifies the collector George Vivian of Claverton Manor: Edwards was his maternal grandfather. The original portrait of Edwards by Thomas Lawrence is linked to another one, of John Vivian, father of George: John Vivian married Marianne Edwards, daughter of Samuel Edwards.
