An earlier and almost identical portrait of Sir John Hotham is in the Pepys LIbrary, Magdalene College, Cambridge. It is a drawing with touches of colour, anonymous and undated. The Pepys LIbrarian has told me that the volume of portraits, in which this is contained, was put together in its final form in 1700. There are slight differences from the 1802 portrait. A 17th-century print, closer to the Pepys watercolour than the NPG etching, is in the British Museum.
