Born in Kilburn, London, Kanya King is the founder and CEO of the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Organisation. She set up the organisation to recognise the outstanding achievements of artists performing music in genres ranging from gospel, jazz, R&B, soul and reggae to hip hop. She launched the MOBO Awards in 1997, re-mortgaging her house to fund it, and a year later she negotiated distribution rights for the event to be broadcast worldwide. Since then, the annual awards show has hosted some of the music industry’s best-known artists. The MOBO Trust, the organisation’s charitable arm, works to advance education in the performing arts among children and young people from diverse backgrounds.
