Regarded as an all time cricketing great with fast reaction, unorthodox back stepper. Played for Sussex. Keen huntsman, shot in the eye on a grouse shoot at Langdale. Ruthless at times in suppression of riotous villagers in his home state, but a progressive. He was keen to serve in the Great War, but Indian princes were not allowed too near to the front. He was invalided as were several hundreds of Indian troops with the effects of severe weather. Financially unreliable, he was litigated against on several occasions. He was partly responsible for the Italian withdrawal from Corfu in 1923.
