This is Sir Henry Rolle, who was Lord Chief Justice in Cromwell's "reign" only accepting this position on the condition that Cromwell agreed not to substantially change the laws of England. As a senior law officer to Charles 2nd he refused to take part in his trial and to sign his death warrant. He was also an MP and was opposed to The Duke of Buckingham's influence over Charles. He was involved in several attempts at Buckingham's impeachment on which occasions Charles suspended Parliament! He was also a prolific legal author and several of his books survive and are in my possession. He lived in Shapwick House, Shapwick, Somerset and died in 1656 2 years after resigning his post. I purchased the house in 2006. The engraving appears as a frontispiece in his books - which were published posthumously. Do you know if any portraits exist from which the engraving could have been copied?
