The Council of Trent closes. Since convening in 1545 it reasserted the doctrines of the Catholic Church in answer to the Protestant Reformation.Assassination of Francis, Duke of Guise, leader of the French Catholic forces against Protestants (known as Huguenots).
The Peace of Amboise ends the First French War of Religion. Huguenots gain limited toleration. A force of united French Catholics and Protestants regains La Havre from the English.
