This portrait illustrates the fashion for nautical-inspired children's dress. Unlike most children who would have worn the fashion, the royal family had close ties to sailing. As teenagers the boys trained at the Royal Navy's cadet school; Prince George forged a successful career in the Navy before becoming king in 1910. His elder brother Prince Albert did not enjoy his time at Dartmouth and was considered to be of a more lethargic temperament than his brother. The three girls received few of the opportunities that their brothers were given.
