The Queen is seen here with Jomo Kenyatta, the first Premier and President of the Republic of Kenya, and his wife. As overseas representative, the Queen was actively involved in making foreign visits and receiving visitors, but during the early 1970s this role brought her into conflict with Edward Heath, her Prime Minister at that time. Heath was a passionate European who took a different view about maintaining relations with the Commonwealth and with African states.
