This is certainly not from 1787. Hoche was a mere corporal in 1789 at the start of the French Revolution. He became commander in chief of the armies referred to in the work early in 1795 and moved on to other commands in August 1796 so it would be logical to date it to this period.
Portraits of Hoche are wildly varying in their depiction of his features but this one is the oddest of them all and bears little resemblance to the work by Boze usually cited as the one he actually sat for. In no other work is he shown with any facial hair apart from long sideburns.
