Engraved portraits of British and foreign subjects, collected by print collector Henry Witte (or Wenham) Martin of 12 Clapton Square, Hackney, and left to the Gallery by him with an inter-leaved copy of Charles Knight’s English Cyclopedia of Biography in 6 volumes, 1856-8, into which the prints were to be inserted for purposes of extra-illustration. Martin’s collection of prints relating to French history and costume was given to the British Museum.
