Photographs by Wolfgang Suschitzky, late 1930s-1994

77 Portraits in set

Pioneering photographer and cinematographer Wolfgang Suschitzky (1912-2016) is best known for his evocative depictions of London in the 1930s and 1940s, and as a prolific cinematographer in documentaries and feature films such as Get Carter (1971). He was also a notable portraitist of humans and animals alike, with a career spanning over seven decades. Suschitzky was born in Vienna to a non-practising Jewish family where his father and uncle ran a progressive bookshop and publishing house. He eventually settled in London in 1935 initially living with his elder sister Edith Tudor-Hart (1908-1973) also a photographer, and a great influence on him. The portraits of distinguished sitters reflect Suschitzky's artistry and craft, and provides an important cultural and visual record of key personalities of the twentieth Century. The photographs are rich gelatin silver prints, hand printed and annotated by Suschitzky himself; they reveal his humanist vision, perfectly capturing the subject's psyche.
