BP Young Artist Award Winner: Hynek Martinec (b.1980)
This portrait was painted in 2006, when Hynek Martinec and his friend Zuzana Jungmanova spent the summer caretaking an artist’s studio in Paris. They conceived the idea of an over-life sized portrait between them. She says of the finished work ‘when I look at my painted twin I get a frisson’. Born in the Czech Republic, Martinec graduated from the Academy of Fine Art, Prague in 2005. In 2003 he won the Academy’s Studio Prize. He has had solo exhibitions in Prague and Paris and currently works as a painter in both cities as well as in London.
