Chasing Mirrors: My Portrait, Shape by Shape
Abstract painter and designer Athier Mousawi led the third year of the project (2011 – 12) working with young people from An-Nisa, Paiwand and Tallo. Their dialogue, creative conversations and cultural exchange shaped the final exhibition at the Gallery, Chasing Mirrors: My Portrait Shape by Shape (14 October 2011 – 8 January 2012). Athier’s work combines geometric Islamic shapes, abstracted Arabic calligraphy and bold colours. Through participatory art workshops, the young people created their own self-portraits for the installation and in response to their work and interaction over the summer, Athier painted a new large-scale non-figurative triptych portrait of them. The works were then connected by a geometric floor pattern.
