Jorge Abbad-Jaime de Aragón studied fine arts at the Complutense University of Madrid and has undertaken several further courses with Antonio López García with whom he has also taught. His work has been seen in numerous exhibitions in Spain and the UK including being selected for the BP Portrait Award in 2014 and 2015.
The portrait is of Antonio López (b.1936), one of Spain’s most renowned realist painters. De Aragón has worked as his assistant, but his intention was to show López García as an ordinary person to express his affection for the older man. The sittings took place in the summer, and the bright light has shadowed the sitter’s eyes.
