Brian Sayers studied at the Slade School of Fine Art.His work has been seen in exhibitions in the United States and UK including the Hunting Art Prize (1994, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002) and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2015 and in the Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery, 1987.
The portrait is of a student of painting whom the artist thought had the type of features he likes to portray. Sayers recalls that after making some initial studies for a larger portrait, he realised that the real drama was in the sitter’s intense expression and a tightly cropped composition was a better solution.
