Jesús María Sáez de Vicuña Ochoa’s work has been seen in group and solo exhibitions in Europe. He was a finalist on the 12th International ARC Salon Portraiture Category 2016 and also in the Villa de Agreda National Painting Award, 2014. He was also selected for the BP Portrait Award in 2017.

The portrait is of the artist’s daughter, Bertha, and is part of an ongoing series in which hair acts as a type of shield. The artist says that in this painting, Bertha’s hair seems to be like a chrysalis within which her personality will develop until she reaches maturity.
