Phoebe Dickinson studied at the Charles H. Cecil Studios, Florence and undertook further courses at the Prince’s Drawing School. Her work has been seen in the exhibitions of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (2014, 2015) and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (2017) and she was chosen to take part in the 2013 Sky Portrait Artist of the Year competition.

The portrait was a commission to depict the Cholmondeley children without any preconceived composition. Dickinson chose to show them in their family home, a house designed by the architect William Kent. The contrast in scale and the placement of the figures in the interior was inspired by the work of William Nicholson.
