Nancy Fletcher studied fine art photography at Edinburgh Art College, later attending the Charles H. Cecil Studios, Florence, and Jacob Collins’s Walter Street Atelier, New York. Her work has been seen in exhibitions in the UK and USA, including the annual exhibitions of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (2011-3),the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2013, and was previously selected for the BP Portrait Award 2012.

The portrait was commissioned by Hamish and Sophie Forsyth after meeting Fletcher at the BP Portrait Award 2012. Fletcher stayed with the family while making preparatory sketches, and the objects shown with the sitters reflect their interests and shared memories.
