Oil on canvas

Stephen Durnin undertook foundation studies in art and design, but is a largely self-taught artist. His work was seen in the 2014 Annual Exhibition of the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin.

The portrait is of the artist’s friend and fellow artist, Sean. Both men are from Ireland and met in London when Durnin came across Sean working en plein air in the West End. Having arrived to meet Durnin on a cold evening, Sean happened to pass by the mirror and Durnin was struck by the reflected profile. He immediately grasped the composition he wanted to achieve.
