Oil on acrylic mirror

David Jon Kassan undertook a BFA at Syracuse University with further studies at institutions including The British Institute of Florence. His work has been seen in solo exhibitions in New York and group exhibitions in the USA and UK. Kassan was previously included in the BP Portrait Award 2014 (winning third prize).

The portrait of Sam Goldofsky is the first in Kassan’s ongoing project, ‘Living Witnesses, Survivors of the Holocaust’. Kassan invited volunteers to sit for portraits and filmed testimonies of their experiences. The Hebrew inscription is a version of the title. Kassan says: ‘Painting can be a very powerful tool. It allows a viewer time to stare and to contemplate the intention of the painting.’
