THOMAS McLEAN RE-ISSUES

In 1824 Richard sold his plates to the publisher Thomas McLean of 26 Haymarket who then re-issued the etchings and published sets of his 'City Characters'.

The examples displayed here show the same etching but the one on the right is a McLean re-issue. He has added his own imprint consisting of his name, address and publication date. Many McLean re-issues in addition have the sitter's name inscribed but, on occasion, as here, the name ('Mr Beauvill') is mistakenly interpreted from the title which had been intended as a pun.

'A View of Beau-ville'

Identified as Benjamin Bovill. This might possibly depict Benjamin Bovill, father of Sir William Bovill (1814-1864), or Benjamin Bovill, wine merchant of 21 Miles's Lane, Cannon Street, London
