When the composer, impresario and viola da gamba player Karl Friedrich Abel died, the artist of this portrait, Thomas Gainsborough, wrote: ‘I shall never cease looking up to heaven …. in hopes of getting one more glance of the man I loved from the moment I heard him touch the string.’
