The England football team won their first and only World Cup victory in 1966, defeating West Germany 4-2 in a tense final at Wembley Stadium. The now iconic image of England’s captain, Bobby Moore, lifting the Jules Rimet trophy cemented Moore as the poster boy of a golden period in English football.
This display celebrates Bobby Moore (1941-1993), a sporting icon who inspired a generation of football fans. Vintage press prints recently acquired by the National Portrait Gallery provide an insight into the professional and personal life of one of England’s best-loved sporting heroes.Photographs Collection: Display
