In 2018, the National Portrait Gallery celebrated 20 years since the launch of our Membership scheme. To mark this milestone and to recognise their continued support a competition was launched for six members to win a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – a portrait taken by photographer Tereza Červeňová, winner of the John Kobal New Work Award in 2015.
Entrants were asked to tell us, in no more than 100 words, how the Gallery inspires them. The judging panel included the Deputy Director, Pim Baxter OBE, our Trustee and Co-Founder of Chocolate Films, Rachel Wang alongside members of our Curatorial team.
This display featured the six winning Members portraits, a film documenting the project, and a selection of portraits depicting some of our well-known Members, such as Dr Who and The Thick of It star Peter Capaldi and British photographer Mary McCartney.
The Gallery is a charity and our Members play a vital role in helping us to flourish. We would like to thank all of our Members for their continued support.

Tereza Červeňová studied Photography at Middlesex University and has recently graduated in her MA at the Royal College of Art in London. Her work has been exhibited and published both in the UK and internationally, including in the National Portrait Gallery, Somerset House, the Royal Festival Hall and the Museum of London, as well as BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Tereza has been nominated for a Magnum Graduate Award and has won a number of early career awards including Daniel Blau Young Photographers’ Award and the D&AD Yellow Pencil for Photography in 2014. In 2015 she won the John Kobal New Work Award as part of the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize competition. Last year Tereza was selected for the prestigious Bloomberg New Contemporaries scheme.
Tereza’s editorial clients include The New Yorker, FT Weekend, Telegraph Magazine, PORT Magazine and she has collaborated with companies such as Channel4, The White Company and Islington Arts Factory. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery.
