Third Prize: Johan Andersson (b.1986)
The sitter in this painting is Johan Andersson’s friend Tamara, who posed in her sitting room. He says ‘my original intention was only to capture a facial expression as she was hesitant in posing nude for me. However, I felt the portrait didn’t work with the face alone and eventually she agreed to pose nude for me. Her insecurity in this is evident in the awkwardness of the pose.’ Born in Sweden, Andersson moved to England at the age of eight. Currently studying Fine Art at Central Saint Martins School of Art, he is due to graduate in 2008.
