The Gallery holds the most extensive collection of portraits in the world. Search over 215,000 works, 150,000 of which are illustrated from the 16th Century to the present day.

John Constable (1776-1837) is renowned throughout the world as a landscape painter of profound originality. Far less familiar are his portraits, studies and drawings of people. Published to coincide with the first ever exhibition dedicated to Constable’s portraits, this beautiful book presents new scholarship and argues that many of these unexplored paintings are worthy of close attention, both for their contribution to the history of portraiture and for the insights they bring to a painter of international acclaim.

Written by art critic Martin Gayford and the Constable scholar Anne Lyles, the catalogue features over 70 full colour illustrations.
