The portrait is of the artist’s daughter and wife and was inspired by a portrait of the Clive family by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1765) in which the European parents have dressed their young daughter in Indian clothing. She stands supported by an Indian maid. The title refers to the practice of both copying and reinterpreting paintings.
