Oil on canvas
1700 x 1300 mm

Wendy Elia studied at Saint Martins College of Art and is a painter, lecturer and tutor. Her work has been seen in group exhibitions of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and was included in the BP Portrait Award in 1983, 1984 and 2010.

The portrait shows the artist with her children and grandchildren - some appearing in the photographs and postcards shown in her studio. The title is a quote from the film On the Waterfront and refers to the artist’s ‘tongue-in-cheek’ self-reflection on her artistic career, family life and society’s unrealistic expectations of women.
