Noel Bensted gained a BA (Honours) degree in illustration from Brighton Polytechnic and an MA from the Royal College of Art. His work has been seen in solo exhibitions at the Medici Gallery, London and in group exhibitions around the UK.

The portrait is of Bensted’s friend Yndia. The use of kente cloth refers to her Ghanaian background. Bensted was inspired by the neo-classical portraits by French Old Master painters Jacques Louis David (1748–1825) and Anne Louis Girodet (1767–1824). His aim was to capture Yndia’s self-possession and arresting gaze.
