Thea Penna studied textile and surface pattern design at Breton Hall College, University of Leeds and then undertook an MA in printed textiles at the Royal College of Art. Her paintings and textile designs have been seen in exhibitions in London and her home town of Harlow, Essex. Her work was included in the BP Portrait Award 2010.

This triptych of self-portraits was painted during January 2011. In creating this triptych of self-portraits, Penna’s aim was to create an image of the universal struggles in modern life. She says ‘I wanted to capture raw emotion and decided that using myself as the subject would give me a greater chance of encapsulating an innate human truth’.
