Blaise Smith studied at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin and was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 2012. Smith’s work has been seen in a touring solo exhibition in Cork, Limerick and Waterford and was previously seen in the BP Portrait Award 2003 and 2004.

The group portrait is part of Smith’s ‘Schoolwork’ commission that entailed producing twenty paintings over the course of a year’s residency at Presentation College, Carlow to depict the modern Irish Secondary School system. An advantage of painting the Home Economics class was that there were often samples to taste.
