Oil on canvas

Anna Wypych studied painting at the Academy of Art in Gdansk. Her work has been seen in numerous group exhibitions in Poland, Italy and the USA and is held in the collections of the Museu Europeu d’Art Modern (MEAM), Barcelona.

The portrait is of a Nina, a model and friend of the artist. It was inspired by the return to Poland’s National Museum in Warsaw of the Orientaliststyle painting The Negress (1884) by the Polish painter Anna Bilinska-Bohdanowicz (1857–93). There was widespread news coverage of the return to public view of this much-loved national treasure after it was removed from the museum in the Second World War.
