Oil on canvas

John Williams studied graphic design before attending Putney School of Art and a portrait painting atelier specialising in photorealism led by Edward Sutcliffe, whose work is also included in the year’s exhibition. Williams’s work has been seen in group exhibitions in London including those of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.

The portrait is of the art critic, writer and photographer, Edward Lucie-Smith. The artist had met Lucie-Smith on a number of occasions and approached him to sit for a portrait for inclusion in a digital book, Detailed Life, including video footage of the sittings and time-lapse sequences of the work in progress.
