Oil on canvas

Robert Neil is a largely self-taught artist who attended the London Atelier of Representational Art. He became President of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) in 2012. His work has been seen in the exhibitions of the RBSA 2010–13 and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters 2012–14.

The portrait is of Philip, a designer and maker working in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Despite originally planning a complex composition surrounded by the tools of his trade, Neil says: ‘During a coffee break Philip leant against the studio wall and somehow his personality seemed to be caught in this pose.’
