David Jon Kassan undertook a bachelor of fine arts degree at Syracuse University and further studies at institutions including The British Institute of Florence. His work has been seen in solo exhibitions in New York and group exhibitions in Los Angeles, Washington DC and Philadelphia.

The portrait is of the artist’s mother, a reluctant sitter, who was offered a portrait of her grandson as ‘payment’. The artist describes painting portraits as his visual diary of relationships with family and loved ones. The Hebrew text reads: ‘Dear Mom,/ This painting is my way to spend more time with you./ My way to meditate on our life together./ And all of the earliest memories I have/All of my earliest memories from you’.
