Oil on canvas

Gareth Reid studied at Glasgow School of Art and Florence Academy of Art. His work has been seen in solo exhibitions in Glasgow, Belfast and Dublin and in numerous group exhibitions including the BP Portrait Award 1998–2000, 2007 (winning the BP Travel Award) and 2008.

The portrait is of the artist’s daughter and was inspired by the theme of ‘bathers’, a subject Reid had used for a solo exhibition of drawings in 2013. Taking the work of Piero Della Francesca as a starting point for the pose, the muted palette was chosen to reflect the pared-down style of the drawings included in Reid’s exhibition.
