At the BP Portrait Award 2014 Awards Ceremony on 24 June 2014 the Young Artist Prize was awarded to Ignacio Estudillo Pérez for Mamá (Juana Pérez).

Ignacio Estudillo Pérez, 28, studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Jerez de la Frontera and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes of Seville and now lives in Malaga.

The portrait of his mother, a hospital worker in the family’s hometown of Jerez de la Frontera, took two and a half years to complete. The lengthy process required numerous sittings in the artist’s living room. After abandoning an earlier effort that he felt failed to capture his mother’s spirit, he switched to a ‘less forced pose, showing a direct relationship between us’ and experimented with several differently coloured backgrounds before choosing a ‘disagreeable white,  rather than a white of purity’.

In 2012 Pérez won the BP Portrait Award second prize for a portrait of his grandfather.

BP Young Artist Award: £7,000

All selected artists aged between 18 and 30 were automatically considered for both the BP Young Artist Award and the BP Portrait Award, but an individual could not win both.
