What is National Memory - Local Stories?

Paul Hamlyn Foundation is an independent grant-making organization. The Foundation's Education and Learning Programme supports innovation in educational practice to improve learning outcomes for young people in and out of school settings. It aims to achieve significant impact across a range of education themes and issues and foster the development and sharing of new practice, experiences and learning between and within schools, local authorities and voluntary organisations.

The Partners

At National Museums Northern Ireland, participants in National Memory – Local Stories explored First World War-related collections at the Ulster Museum. The Museum’s History Department collects objects relating to the social, economic and political history of Ireland, including photographs, coins and medals and militaria.

At National Museums Scotland, participants in National Memory – Local Stories explored First World War-related collections at the National War Museum and at the National Museum of Flight. Both museums provide a perspective on Scots at war, and the courage of men and women in wartime.

At National Museum Wales, participants in National Memory – Local Stories looked at First World War-related collections at National Museum Cardiff and St Fagans National History Museum, which explores aspects of how people in Wales have lived, worked and spent their leisure time.

At Redbridge Museum, participants in the London-based National Memory – Local Stories project will explore collections linked to the changing landscape of East London and suburbia, relating it to journeys in and around London made during the First World War. The museum explores the many different people, places and events that are part of the history of Redbridge in north-east London. The London-based National Memory – Local Stories workshops will take place in summer, 2014.

At The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum, participants in National Memory – Local Stories explored collections relating to the First World War, with a special focus on the personal diaries of two soldiers from Wiltshire.

The Museum holds the collection and archives relating to the Infantry Regiments of Berkshire and Wiltshire from 1748 to the current regiment, The Rifles.

Media 19 are an arts and digital media organisation delivering UK wide cross platform creative participation projects.
