Picasso’s highly developed sense of humour was freely expressed in caricatural prints and drawings. In the 1950s, Picasso’s caricatures of his friend and fellow artist Juame Sabartés invariably emphasised the latter’s myopia, short stature, portliness and touchingly unworldly character. Many took the form of comical narratives. Others involved adapting photos of glamorous models and film stars culled from popular magazines. Here, the American film star, Esther Williams, in one of her swimming roles as the heroine of MGM’s Dangerous When Wet, directed by Charles Walters. The original pin-up came from the weekly movie magazine Ciné-Révélation.
