An Artist’s Perspective

Isabella Watling is a portrait painter directly inspired by John Singer Sargent and works using the ‘sight-size’ method that he helped to popularise. We invited her to the exhibition to offer an artist’s perspective on Sargent’s style, revealing the techniques behind three of his most arresting portraits.

Isabella studied and now teaches at the Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, the city where Sargent was born in 1856. Working largely to commission, her work has been exhibited in Florence and London, and her portrait Gina and Cristiano was selected for the BP Portrait Award 2014 at the National Portrait Gallery.
