Van Dyck: supporters

The 2013–14 campaign to raise £10 million to acquire Van Dyck’s last self-portrait was a huge success. The campaign started with the Gallery’s own Portrait Fund, which was set up in 2006 in order to ensure that major portraits continue to be added to the Collection. Fundraising was organised jointly with the Art Fund, which offered an early and generous grant towards the acquisition as well as the tour. The Heritage Lottery Fund made the final contribution of £6.3 million, enabling the portrait to be saved. The success of the campaign demonstrated the compelling allure of this brilliant but deceptively simple painting and, crucially, the determination of so many supporters that the self-portrait, having spent almost 400 years in private collections, should now be available to all, and for ever.
