In 1931, after a visit to Berlin, Lewis published Hitler, which presented Hitler as a ‘man of peace’. Following a visit to Germany with his wife in 1937, Lewis changed his views and began to retract his previous political comments. Although his political views made him an unpopular public figure, Lewis held on to many of his friends, and his ‘Thirty Personalities’ exhibition in 1932, which included some high profile figures, such as Rebecca West, G. K. Chesterton and Wing-Commander Orlebar, reinforced Lewis’s reputation as an excellent draughtsman.
