Froanna (Portrait of the Artist's Wife) (1937)

Lewis excelled in a great variety of artistic styles and the works he completed in the same year are often vastly different from one another. It is remarkable that the Wyndham Lewis responsible for Blast and abstract Vorticist works is also responsible for the naturalism as well as the warmth and tenderness visible in this portrait of his wife.

Here Froanna, who is wearing her husband’s dressing-gown, meets the viewer’s gaze with openness. The warm colours and homely setting contribute to an overall sense of calm.
