(François Paul) Jules Grévy
(1807-1891), President of the French RepublicSitter in 6 portraits
Jules Grévy's term as President (1879-87) confirmed the establishment of the Third Republic (1870-1940) in France. Grévy became an advocate in 1837 and was elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1848. After the fall of the Empire, he was chosen as President of the Assembly in 1871, and occupied this position until 1873. In 1876, he was elected President of the Chamber of Deputies, a post that he filled with such efficiency that upon the resignation of Marshal MacMahon in 1879 he was elected, without opposition by the republican parties, as President of the Republic.
