Born and brought up in Wakefield, Yorkshire, Hepworth went from Leeds School of Art to the Royal College of Art in 1921. She won a travel scholarship in 1924 to Italy, where she married the sculptor John Skeaping. She joined the 7 and 5 Society in 1931, and was a member of Abstraction-Creation and Unit One. Her work paralleled that of Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson, her second husband, in achieving an international status for British art. Her retrospectives held during the 1960s included the Whitechapel Art Gallery (1962), the Rijksmuseum (1965) and the Tate Gallery (1968). She was made a Dame in 1965. Her studio in St Ives, Cornwall is now a museum.
