At sixteen, Dickinson began working for his father, a stationer and lithograph publisher. He travelled to Italy in 1850 and spent three years there, and started to paint. On his return, he rented a studio where he continued painting. Dickinson joined the lawyer Tom Hughes, the writer Charles Kingsley and others as founding members of the London Working Men's College. Together with Ruskin, Dickinson conducted the first art classes at the college. He painted many portraits of writers including George Eliot, the politician Richard Cobden, lawyers, religious figures, and men of letters and science. Dickinson regularly exhibited portraits at the Royal Academy from 1848 to 1891.
